British Library Selects Preservica to Deliver Cloud-Based Digital Preservation Platform for Expanding Digital Collections

OXFORD, UK AND BOSTON, MA – 07/03/2026 – (SeaPRwire) –  As the scale and complexity of digital cultural heritage collections continue to grow worldwide, national libraries are investing in advanced infrastructure to safeguard digital knowledge for future generations. In this context, Preservica, a provider of AI-powered Active Digital Preservation™ solutions, has been selected by the British Library to supply a Digital Preservation Repository platform and related project implementation services to support the long-term stewardship of the Library’s vast digital collections.

Following a comprehensive procurement and evaluation process, Preservica will deploy a secure, cloud-based digital preservation environment designed to manage, protect, and maintain long-term accessibility to the Library’s rapidly expanding digital holdings. These collections include a wide variety of formats such as e-books, electronic journals, sound recordings, UK web archives, electronic theses, and digitized heritage materials.

The new platform will enable the British Library to strengthen its capacity to continuously acquire and manage digital publications while ensuring that files remain readable, authentic, and accessible over time. With digital content growing at an unprecedented rate, robust preservation systems have become essential for institutions tasked with protecting national documentary heritage.

“Robust and secure digital preservation is essential for the effective custodianship, management and long-term readability of modern digital library collections,” said Dr. Maureen Pennock, Head of Digital Collection Management at the British Library. She noted that Preservica’s platform and implementation expertise stood out during the selection process, particularly given the scale and diversity of the Library’s digital assets. According to Pennock, the investment will reinforce the Library’s capacity to continue collecting and preserving digital publications for the long term.

The British Library is among the world’s largest libraries, holding more than 170 million items across its collections and adding approximately three million new items each year. In addition to physical materials, the Library collects a rapidly growing body of digital content under the Legal Deposit Libraries (Non-Print Works) Regulations 2013, which require the preservation of UK digital publications.

Mike Quinn, CEO of Preservica, emphasized the unique operational demands faced by national libraries responsible for safeguarding large-scale digital archives. He stated that institutions of this scale require highly secure systems, deep domain expertise, and infrastructure designed to preserve digital assets over decades. Quinn added that Preservica is proud to support the British Library with a preservation platform built to ensure that the United Kingdom’s published and documentary heritage remains accessible for generations to come.

With this collaboration, the British Library joins a number of prominent national and research institutions that rely on Preservica’s Active Digital Preservation platform. These include the New York Public Library, Library and Archives Canada, and the National Library of Australia, which use the platform to manage and preserve large-scale digital collections within enterprise environments.
