Nostalgia Only Works If the Hits Land

By: Robert Sterling – SeaPRwire – Seven decades of blue characters do not automatically sell a box of cards. Fans already own the comics, the cartoons and the toys. A new premium set has to convert that recognition into chase behaviour. Numbered parallels, sketch cards and relics are the levers. The December release will show whether they pull.

On 4 October 2026 in Los Angeles, Keepsake announced a partnership with Peyo Company for an all-new The Smurfs collectible trading card program. The release is described as a premium collection celebrating nearly seven decades of the characters. The Smurfs were created by Belgian artist Peyo, also known as Pierre Culliford. They first appeared in 1958 inside the Johan and Peewit comic adventure The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. The property later expanded across comics, television, movies, toys and collectibles. The classic animated series that arrived in 1981 introduced a wider audience to Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, Clumsy Smurf, Jokey Smurf, Gargamel and Azrael. Nearly seventy years later the characters remain instantly recognisable. Mathew Ezer, Head of Partnerships at Keepsake, stated the company is excited to welcome the property and sees history, personality and artwork that can be turned into a colourful collecting experience. The first product is The Smurfs Keepsake Premiere Edition. Collectors can chase numbered parallels, short-print inserts and ultra-rare one-of-one cards. Designs draw on the personalities and visual style created by Peyo. Randomly inserted are original hand-drawn one-of-one sketch cards, rare signature cards and memorabilia or relic cards. The character list covers the main village residents plus Gargamel and Azrael. The configuration is two packs per box, six cards per pack and two hits per box. Each box is guaranteed to contain at least two numbered cards, memorabilia or relic cards, original sketch cards or signature cards. Fabienne Gilles, CCO Licensing at Peyo Company, said a premium trading-card program had been on the company’s list and that the partnership with Keepsake felt like a natural fit because each Smurf already carries a distinct personality. The first collection is scheduled to arrive in December 2026. Pre-orders are open at the Keepsake website. Keepsake produces premium cards for entertainment, music, anime and pop-culture properties. Peyo Company, created by Peyo’s daughter Véronique Culliford, manages the brand through licensing, distribution, production and creative units based in Belgium.

The commercial test is clear. Watch December box sell-through at the listed configuration. Watch how many of the one-of-one sketches and relics actually trade on the secondary market in the first sixty days. If both numbers stay strong, the nostalgia has been successfully turned into repeat demand. If either softens, the set remains a one-season novelty. Those two figures decide the outcome.
